VISTA (CNS) - A fire engulfed a mobile home at a Vista trailer park Friday, killing a resident along with her dog and cat.

The blaze in the 700 block of Sycamore Avenue was reported shortly before 10 a.m., according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department.

"Deputies arrived first and were directed to a mobile home by neighbors who said there was a woman still inside," sheriff's Sgt. Anthony Portillo said. "Deputies broke a back window and a sliding-glass door in an attempt to get inside ... (but) were pushed back by fire and heavy smoke."

After extinguishing the flames, which took about 40 minutes, firefighters found the unresponsive woman and pulled her out of the gutted home, Vista Fire Chief Ned Vander Pol said. The resident, whose identity was not immediately available, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Firefighters also discovered the lifeless pets inside the charred structure, Portillo said.

A deputy was treated at the scene for scrapes to one of his hands he suffered when he broke a window to try to rescue the woman.

The cause of the blaze, which destroyed the mobile home, was under investigation, Vander Pol said.
