More than two decades ago, Marty McSorley paid around $600,000 for an aging Spanish Colonial-style home resting along the Hermosa Beach Strand. The former L.A. Kings and San Jose Sharks hockey player and his wife Leanne Schuster, a onetime professional beach volleyball player, subsequently razed the structure; they then enlisted architect Grant Kirkpatrick and builder Dave Baldwin to create a stunning contemporary beach house. Now, after spending years in their custom crib, the couple have decided to sell. Newly on the market, their house is asking a whopping $22.9 million.

Nestled securely behind walls and gates, and fronted by an attached two-car garage, the stucco and copper roof structure is tucked snugly between two houses on a double lot boasting over 60 feet of ocean frontage. A cozy courtyard greets with a combination plunge pool and spa, plus a small turf yard flanked by a built-in barbecue and covered patio sporting a cozy wood-burning fireplace. Once inside, five bedrooms and four baths are spread across 4,373 square feet of living space punctuated throughout by high-grade stone, tile and wood finishes, and interiors that take advantage of the ocean and Manhattan Beach Pier views via expansive windows and walls of glass.

The front door spills into an entry foyer displaying a winding staircase topped by a dangling fixture resembling a ship’s navigation light. From there, a spacious open-concept area overlooking the volleyball courts, ocean and sand contains a living room warmed by a fireplace embedded in a stacked-stone wall reaching to the slanted wood-beam ceiling. An adjacent dining area next to a walk-in bar connects to the gourmet kitchen, which is outfitted with an eat-in island, Wolf and Sub-Zero appliances, and a light-filled breakfast nook with a built-in banquette.

An ocean-view deck borders the luxe bath, which is equipped with dual vanities, a soaking tub and large frameless shower. Down on the basement level, a massive entertaining space hosts a kitchenette and sliding glass doors leading to a patio, as well as a 670-bottle wine cellar and an office space. An additional bedroom on this floor holds a spa-inspired bath with steam shower; and rounding it all out is a handy utility room ideal for storing all the equipment you’ll surely need to partake in The Strand’s endless recreation possibilities.

McSorley, 58, is an Ontario-born former pro hockey player probably best remembered for hitting fellow enforcer Donald Brashear in the head with his stick in the final minutes of a Boston Bruins-Vancouver Canucks game. Brashear lost consciousness and suffered a Grade-3 concussion, which led to McSorley’s assault conviction, one-year suspension and eventual retirement from the NHL.

John Corrales and Nick Schneider of Compass serve as the listing agents for the McSorley’s home.
