The Hillside neighborhood on Portland's west side has a handful of notable local landmarks. For starters, its community center, formerly the Catlin Gabel school's campus, was designed by famed local architect Pietro Belluschi.

It also claims Pittock Mansion, a 46-room estate built by an Oregonian publisher in 1914, bought by the city of Portland for $225,000 in 1964. This house sits less than a mile from there, through the neighborhood’s twisting and turning streets, along the quiet ridge of Northwest Greenbriar Terrace.

Built in 1929, the exterior still boasts all its lovely Tudor trimmings. There’s the steeply pitched roof with its swooping gutterline on one side, like an elegant leg kicking out, the decorative half-timbering that runs above the brick on the façade, and the clusters of stained-glass windows. Enter through one of two arched doorways. There’s a simple brick alcove off the driveway, with its own stained-glass window, naturally. Then the main entrance is accessed through a more ornate and decorative arch that ushers visitors into another protected alcove at the front door. 

Once inside, the foyer is airy and nicely proportioned. The decorative details that are found throughout all come together here, with coved ceilings, inlaid wood floors, and the wrought iron railing at the stairs. There’s even a leaded glass door into the dining room that allows for views out the back of the house and all the way to the river. The Gothic arches also continue, with one leading the way into the living room off to the left.

As far as layouts go, this house has an easy circular flow between the foyer and main rooms, which makes for ideal entertaining. The dining room is at the center, flanked by the living room and kitchen, as well as a cozy sunroom with big picture windows.

The kitchen was updated more recently with designer Robin Rigby Fisher. It maintains its original fir floors and stained glass for authenticity, alongside high-end appliances, quartz counters, custom cabinetry, a baking center, and floor-to-ceiling tile. 

Up the staircase, past the three stained glass windows, there’s a big landing with more inlaid wood and Gothic arches. At the top of the stairs, there’s a primary suite with a picture window and cedar-lined walk-in closet, as well as three more bedrooms and a hall bathroom with washer and dryer. Speaking of tile, three of the house’s bathrooms still boast their vintage hues, which span from baby blue, seafoam green and yellow, to purple, and some even have matching stained-glass windows.

Downstairs is the finished basement, with a family room, office, guest suite with bathroom, and dedicated wine room for 2,000 bottles. Unusually for a basement, you'll find high ceilings, wood floors, big windows and even a woodburning fireplace.

A glass exterior door leads to another entertainer’s dream: several outdoor rooms atop a bluestone patio with everything you need for an easy summer shindig, including a gas fireplace and a high-end kitchen with Il Fornino Italian pizza oven. Beyond that, there’s a flat grassy yard for play, and when you’re ready for a more solitary stroll, two Forest Park trailheads nearby.
