Shamira Cruz, the ROSS Grant Coordinator for North Bergen Housing Authority, has been named the RSC (Resident Service Coordinator) of the Month for September by New England Resident Service Coordinators, Inc. for her commitment and dedication to the tenants served through the NBHA.

Cruz is bilingual, and since most of the population that she serves only speaks Spanish, she uses her skills to work to ensure that her tenants are receiving the appropriate state and federal benefits that they are entitled to. Tenants who want to learn English are now also provided with English as a second language classes in the community rooms at the North Bergen Public Library (NBPL).

Cruz also ensures that each education and service provider gives information in both English and Spanish in order to facilitate learning for the majority of the NBHA population.

The NBHA is a recipient of the Residents in Self Sufficiency Grant (ROSS) from HUD largely due to the hard work of Cruz and her collaborations with the numerous partner organizations she has cultivated relationships with that benefit her community. This includes critical partnerships with local organizations to host seminars throughout the year on a variety of health-related topics. For example, Cruz brought in Planned Parenthood to provide health info sessions for youth and young adults; and events for seniors to make sure they are thriving and living full independent lives in the community.

Cruz’s department also received acclaim for its development of “The Senior Moment Project” in conjunction with The Act Now Foundation (ANF), a local Alzheimer’s and dementia non-profit organization. The project continues under her direction.

BCB Bancorp cited for small cap work for 2022

BCB Bancorp, Inc. (the “Company”) (NASDAQ: BCBP), the holding company for BCB Community Bank, has been named to the Piper Sandler 2022 Bank & Thrift Sm-All Stars, a listing of the top performing small-cap banks and thrifts in the nation. The Company was one of only 35 banks and thrifts named to the list out of more than 350 reviewed, and one of only three headquartered in New Jersey. This is the third time the Company has been named to the annual list.

To earn Sm-All Star status, companies needed to have a market cap below $2.5 billion and clear numerous hurdles related to growth, profitability, credit quality and capital strength. Piper Sandler’s screening methodology eliminated 327 institutions, or 90 percent of banks and thrifts that trade on a major exchange. “The performance metrics of the remaining 35 institutions are outstanding, with the Class of 2022 delivering bottom line results that are markedly better than the industry as a whole,” the company stated in the report.

Of the 35 financial institutions chosen, BCB Bancorp, Inc. outperformed the group median in four of the seven categories reviewed by Piper Sandler, including year-over-year EPS growth (28.3 percent), ROAE (14.7 percent), TCE (8.1 percent), and Net Charge-Offs/Average Loans (0.02 percent).

Piper Sandler Companies is an American independent investment bank and financial services company. The purpose of its annual Bank & Thrift Sm-All Stars list is “to identify the top performing small-cap banks and thrifts in the country,” according to the report.

HCCC named ‘2022 Great College to Work For’

Hudson County Community College (HCCC) has been selected as one of the best colleges in the nation to work for, according to the Great Colleges to Work For program. The College was recognized for excellence in professional development; shared governance; faculty experience; diversity, inclusion, and belonging; and confidence in senior leadership.

The Great Colleges to Work For program is one of the largest workplace-recognition programs in the United States. The program uses a two-part process to assess colleges that earn top ratings from their employees regarding workplace practices and policies.

This year, 212 institutions participated in the program, including 130 four-year institutions and 82 two-year institutions. Sixty-eight institutions have been recognized as a 2022 Great College to Work For, including 46 four-year institutions and 22 two-year institutions. HCCC is the only college in New Jersey to be honored with this recognition.

Home to 18,000 full- and part-time students, HCCC is also home to nearly 1,000 employees, 40 percent of whom are former students. Anna Krupitskiy, HCCC Vice President for Human Resources, said that when Dr. Reber began his presidency in 2018, he focused on climate, culture, and community, addressing morale, salaries, and developing more trusting relationships between administration and all employees.

Dr. Reber inaugurated and conducts Monthly Town Hall Meetings and provides other platforms for faculty, staff, and students to learn of recent HCCC developments, and participate in dialogue with college leaders and one another. At the start of his tenure, he also developed collaborative relationships with each of the College’s four collective bargaining units.

In 2019, Dr. Reber created the President’s Council on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (PACDEI). The council consists of more than 40 members of the HCCC community – students, faculty, staff, and external community members who work together to foster a welcoming, diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment that embraces and celebrates shared values among all constituencies.

HCCC also makes it possible for faculty and staff to attend in-person conferences, workshops and institutes, and participate in webinars hosted by a multitude of agencies.
