REFRACTION: Make a stained glass panel to hang at home and brighten up any space. Glass artist Mary Tantillo leads upcoming workshops.

Light Work: Learn the process of making a stained-glass window in a two-day class at SwellColors Glass Studio in Surf City alongside artist Mary Tantillo and her team, utilizing professional tools, materials and guidance. The SwellColors crew says it’s a great, beginner-friendly way to explore an ancient tradition, learn techniques and tricks, and create a panel to take home. The workshops are Oct. 22-23 and Nov. 12-13, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Participants will make a window measuring 12 by 14 inches or 13 inches square. Bring a few simple design ideas or choose from pre-selected patterns. Wear comfortable shoes; pack a lunch. The workshop is for ages 15 and older; preregistration is required. Class size is limited to eight so students receive instructors’ focused attention.

“Stained glass is a unique craft, and every window is truly one of a kind,” Tantillo said. “Come learn this ancient art form, using glass to transform the light in your space. We would love to share our knowledge with you and help you to create a special piece of art for your home that you can enjoy for generations to come.”

Tantillo’s artwork can be found at the New Jersey Surfing Museum at the Tuckerton Seaport and The Noyes Museum Gift Shop in Hammonton.

Up Next at the Annex: Painters Dee Turba and Nancy Glines are the current featured artists in the show hanging now at the new Pine Shores Art Association gallery, inside the former Tuckerton Borough Hall at 140 East Main St. in Tuckerton. The monthly rotating shows include some art available to purchase.

The first few featured artist shows at the Tuckerton site will be for members who contributed to painting, repairing, flooring and outfitting the space in preparation to reopen as the PSAA annex, a secondary location of the Manahawkin-based organization.

A featured artist reception will be held in Tuckerton on Wednesday, Oct. 12, from 6 to 8 p.m. Thereafter the public may visit and view the works on Tuesdays from 6 to 8 p.m. and Fridays between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Parking is behind the building; turn at the Wells Fargo bank. The building entrance is on the south side.

“Dee (Turba) and I have both presented paintings that illustrate our path as artists, from early years to today, to show how we’ve progressed,” Glines explained. “We’ve labeled each with a little information to share why each painting means something special to us.

“I have a large charcoal drawing that I did in the 1970s and a pencil portrait of my son from 1976,” Glines continued. “I’m including some hand-painted pillows as well. I know Dee has some prize-winning, exceptional art to share as well.”

Also at the annex, beginning Saturday, Oct. 15, is Open Art Studio Saturdays: Beginner Drawing. The free beginner drawing session includes supplies. Space is limited to 16 people, first come, first served.

Tuckerton-based Art Chat, an official part of the PSAA, meets on the first and third Tuesday of each month at 10 a.m. at the Tuckerton branch of the Ocean County Library to share what artists are working on and receive feedback if desired or “just to see what everyone else is doing,” according to founder Nancy Glines. Newcomers are welcome. The only “rules” for participation, she said, are to be kind, helpful and encouraging to fellow artists. For more information, contact Glines at dun.roamin@verizon.net.

Go Figure: Life drawing sessions with a live, undraped model are open to the public on the first and third Sunday of each month, 10 a.m. to noon, and now also on the second and fourth Wednesday, 6 to 8 p.m., in the historic church at 120 North Main St. (Stafford Township Historical Society headquarters). Sunday sessions are traditional figure study; Wednesday evening sessions are “weird and wonderful” with various themes, props, costumes or accessories. No formal instruction is offered. Artists of all levels of skill and experience are welcome. Upcoming sessions are set for Wednesday, Oct. 12, with model Charlie and Sunday, Oct. 16, with model Monique. Bring keen eyes and favorite art supplies to float the creative boat. Drop in for $12.

Good Gourd: Visit Maker’s Station in West Creek on Saturday, Oct. 22, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. during the Pumpkin Jam(boree) and see glass blowing demonstrations in the garage. Start or expand a collection of decorative glass baubles to give the spooky season a little extra glow. At the same time, shop the pottery sale and take home handmade wares by student and resident potters. Rain date is Oct. 23. For more information call studio/gallery owner Albert Gomez at 609-296-2042.

At Last: Swing by Beach Haven borough hall to explore the new art show, “Off-Season Bliss,” presented by Pine Shores Art Association, on display through mid-January. Part of the months-long exhibition is a special holiday art fair event on Small Business Saturday, the weekend after Thanksgiving. The show is a colorful collection of nearly 50 paintings by association members, depicting shore dwellers’ favorite time of year – when the visitors leave and residents reclaim their home.

A handy exhibit guide lists artists’ contact information for purchasing the works.

The gallery is located on the first floor of the municipal building at South Bay and Engleside avenues. Pop in during non-holiday business hours, weekdays 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Meet the artists on Saturday, Nov. 26, during a reception and art fair, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Some standout works in the show are Paul Daukas’ painting titled “Young Couple in Love,” Nancy Willen’s “Seagull” and Irene Bausmith’s “Barnegat Light Dunes.”
